The persistent teacher shortage in Illinois has evolved from a short-term crisis into a chronic, structural challenge. While competitive compensation and stronger pipelines remain critical, I argue that school climate—specifically the daily conditions that influence whether teachers stay—deserves equal attention. Drawing on original research linking school climate to academic performance, this article identifies the most powerful climate subdomains to leverage educator retention. It concludes with actionable strategies for CSBOs and leaders to foster cultures where talented educators choose to build their careers.
